Here Be Dragons
Exigent of Fivefold Seal in Darkness
You met frequently when you visited the little riverside town of Shoal’s End down the hill from the Monastery. It’s just across the river from Cadia, and a ferry runs regularly. It’s a rough town, full of fisherfolk and sailors too poor to live in Cadia proper, and you often went to get into fights at the Hungry Jackal or in the alleyways at night, much to your Master’s annoyance. You barely spoke the first three times you met. The first was during a brawl at the Hungry Jackal in which she flipped you over her shoulder to break a table clean in half. The second was much the same, but the third time you met was down a back alley shortcut between the Hungry Jackal and the Monastery. She was keeping six men at bay with a flashing knife and looked to be in slightly over her head. You joined the fray to even the odds and the two of you made short work of them. Then she vanished while your back was turned. The next time you saw her was slightly more amicable, and introductions were made over drinks after the fighting had died down. You never really figured out what Smiling Devil’s job was, but it involved getting into a lot of fights around town and put more coin than a peasant ought to have in her pockets. You did almost as much fighting as talking, but it was mostly for sport, and you tended to declare a truce whenever one or the other was in genuine trouble. You got the feeling she started to count on you being there when things went south, and was annoyed on the few occasions you were out of town or busy with monastery business. Eventually you worked out a schedule of when she could be reckless and still expect backup. When the Scavenger Lord Seven Pearls passed through Cadia on a grand expedition you were astonished to hear Smiling Devil proclaim she had been offered a position in his retinue. She was uncertain about travelling so far from home, but the pay was good. You convinced her to go, it being the eve of your own departure to Wavecrest. It’s been five years now, and no one has heard from the expedition.
